WAHM Spotlight - Dickinson Custom Furniture and Kitchenware - Review

Dickinson Custom Furniture has been a family run business since 1990!  Now run by Kiyomi Dickinson and her Husband Aaron it was originally started by Aaron's parents.  From 1990 to 2003 the business was run out of Kiyomi's In-laws home until her MIL decided that she wanted to park her car in the garage again.  At that point they built their current workshop.

Dickinson Custom Furniture specializes in custom woodworking.  Anything from entertainment centers, tables and chairs, to their line of kitchenware.  Kiyomi also does some incredible scroll work!

Even though Kiyomi doesn't spend as much time in the shop as she used to she is still very active in running the Business side of the business.  With the help and support of her family and friends Kiyomi manages to get all of the computer side of the work done while the kiddos are napping or down for the night.  On occasion her daughter even gets to go to the shop with Daddy and help sand!

It isn't everyday that you see this kind of handmade craftsmanship any more!  Especially not from such a young generation.  (Kiyomi and her husband are both in their mid 20's!!!).  Besides being young they also make sure that they are good stewards of the earth!  They use primarily locally grown and sustainably harvested hardwoods in their kitcheware. They also mill and dry their own logs and lumber.

As a family they try and be as self sustainable as possible.  They raise their own chicken, ducks and guinea fowl for egg and meat, they have goats for milk and have their own vegetable garden.

They help to promote their business by participating in various farmers markets their kids along for the ride all the while!

Kiyomi recently sent me a small cutting board and utensil set to test out.
First I have to say that they are as beautiful as the pictures!!!
The cutting board is made from 5 different types of wood and has a juice lip on one side.
The utensil set is great!  It is very well constructed and works great!

When the items first arrived at my house hubby was convinced that I was not allowed to use them!  He said that they were way to pretty and that they should be show pieces not working pieces.

Well that lasted all of a day before I decided that they were calling my name and needed to be used.

All of their kitchenware is finished in a flax plant derived true boiled linseed oil or FDA approved finish for salad bowls to help keep the water out of the pores of the wood and make them suitable for use in the kitchen.

You can check learn more about Dickinson Custom Furniture on their facebook page or their website.
If you live in the midwest you might even catch them at a local farmers market!

If you want a chance to win either a utensil set or cutting board from Dickinson Custom Furniture check out our 2000/500 fan celebration where we have one up for grabs!!
